How It Works

The seven red parking meters installed throughout the Downtown will serve as donation stations as well as a reminder that there is a positive alternative to giving cash to panhandlers. Donations can also be made through this website.

How will the funds collected be used?

The City and County of Santa Cruz currently fund an Outreach Social Worker whose work in the streets of Santa Cruz involves daily contact with people experiencing homelessness, many who panhandle. The Downtown Outreach Worker engages with individuals in the downtown Santa Cruz area and connects them to needed resources such as mental health or substance abuse treatment, social services, physical health services, financial benefits, transportation, meals, emergency shelter and longer term housing. The goal is to reduce the need for criminal justice involvement and psychiatric hospitalization, and assist individuals in making the transition out of homelessness. The Outreach Worker works closely with Downtown merchants, the Santa Cruz Police Department, County Mental Health, and various service providers. It is anticipated that the Outreach Worker will make contact with 30 individuals each month and make 60 referrals for services..

How will the project raise funds?

The money collected through this website or in the meters will be used to fund the mission of Imagine Positive Change.   Seed money to fabricate and install the meters and to print and distribute the literature for Imagine Positive Change has been raised through donations from generous community members as well as the Downtown Association. City of Santa Cruz Department of Public Works donated retired parking meters to Imagine Positive Change.  All the money collected through meters, sponsorships or website donations will be used for the program itself and none for administrative or other costs of running the program.

Businesses, organizations, and individuals are invited to sponsor a meter.  Sponsorships are $500 per year. 100% of all funds collected through sponsorships or meter donations will be used to help make positive change, as all administrative costs have been contributed.
